The price of freedom

36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. John 8:36

17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 2 Corinthians 3:17

The honest truth is that freedom is not free, it comes at an incredible price.  I live in the United States of America and many have forgotten the cost of the freedom that we enjoy.  Many have forgotten the countless lives that were given over the years so that we can enjoy freedom on a daily basis.

But the freedom I am referring to today is the freedom that we have through Jesus Christ.  Because of Jesus shed blood at Calvary we are able to be set free from the curse of sin and death.  When we come to Christ and place our faith in Jesus all of our sins are washed away.  Yes we still have a sin nature that battles daily with the leading of the Holy Spirit, but we are no longer bound by sin.

As we grow in Christ we continue to walk in greater levels of freedom.  The more mature we grow in the Lord the weaker the desires of the sinful nature has on our lives.  The apostle Paul wrote that if we walk according to the Spirit we will not gratify the lust of the flesh.  The key to walking in holiness with the Lord is simply growing in deep intimacy with Him on a daily basis.  As we abide in Him we will walk in the strength and wisdom of the Lord.

Jesus paid an incredible price so that we could be free.  He gave up His glory in heaven and came to this earth as a humble servant.  He was despised and rejected by those He created and those He came to save.  He was stripped naked and tied to a post and whipped over and over again with a cat of nine tales that had pieces of bone and metal tied to the tip that ripped into Jesus skin on contact and ripped out skin and muscles when it was pulled back.  He had a crown of large thorns placed deeply into His skull hitting every nerve and sending incredible pain throughout His entire body.  He was nailed by His hands and His feet to a large cross and as He hung in the air it was these very nails that held His body weight.  As He hung upon the cross He slowly suffocated and was insulted by those who looked on.

Jesus was beaten beyond recognition and all of it was because of His love for us.  None of us deserve freedom or salvation because the human heart is inherently wicked and people left to themselves will certainly destroy themselves.  But because of His love He paid the ultimate price.  Let us never take for granted what Jesus has done for us.  Let us thank Him daily for our freedom and our salvation and let us be willing to give Him our time and our lives.

Father I come before you today and ask you to reveal to me the depth of Jesus sacrifice for me.  Help me to understand the freedom I have through the blood of Jesus and let me simply walk in humility each and every day.  Let me simply be thankful for all you have done for me and simply be willing to give you my life.  I pray all these things in the mighty name of Jesus, Amen!
