Or do you not know, brethren (for I speak to those who know the law), that the law has dominion over a man as long as he lives? 2 For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released from the law of her husband. 3 So then if, while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she has married another man. 4 Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another—to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God. 5 For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death. 6 But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter. Romans 7:1-6.
The apostle Paul uses the analogy of a woman being married to a man to demonstrate how when we are in Jesus Christ we are free from the demands of the law. The apostle Paul points out that as long as a woman is married she is bound by the covenant of marriage to the man she is married to. If she marries another while her husband is alive she is looked at as an adulterer and has broken the marriage covenant. But if her husband dies she is set free from the marriage covenant.
The apostle Paul is showing through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ that we are set free from the law. By placing our faith in Jesus we have died with Him and we have been risen to new life with Jesus Christ. As believers in Christ the demands of the law no longer have any hold upon us because the law has been fulfilled by Jesus. This is why Jesus said that He did not come to destroy the law, but He came to fulfill the law. Through His life that was without sin, He was able to be the perfect sacrifice. He is the only one who was ever capable of redeeming humanity. We could not redeem ourselves because every person born on this earth is born into sin, to have a sinless sacrifice you would need someone who was born on the earth but not born into sin.
Jesus was born as a result of the Holy Spirit coming upon Mary and Mary becoming miraculously pregnant with the Son of God. Mary had never known a man and it was through a pure miracle that Mary became pregnant and Jesus was born. All who place their faith and trust in Jesus Christ have the precious blood of Jesus applied to their lives and every sin is forgiven. Whenever we feel condemned or come to believe that our past holds power over our life we must remember that our sins have been nailed to the cross. They no longer have power over our life.
To walk in freedom we must come to understand the depth of God’s word. It is the truth that sets us free and the reasons many live in bondage is simply because they don’t understand biblical truth. They have not taken the time to seek the Holy Spirit for wisdom and guidance as they study the scriptures. They give up far to early before the Holy Spirit reveals to their heart the deep things of God’s word. If our desire is to walk in freedom then we must be committed to the deep study of God’s word.
