Romans 7:13-25:13 Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not!

13 Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful. 14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin. 15 For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do. 16 If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good. 17 But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. 18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. 19 For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. 20 Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.

21 I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good. 22 For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. 23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. 24 O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!

So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.  Romans 7:13-25.

The law is not evil and the law was meant to reveal to humanity its need of a savior.  It is sin within us that desires to gratify the desires of the flesh.  In ourselves we are powerless against sin.  It is impossible to overcome the desires of the flesh in our own strength.  When we fail to know God’s word and we fail to understand God’s grace we will attempt to overcome sin in our own strength and when we fail we will succumb to the lie of the enemy.  The enemy will heap condemnation on our lives, but the truth is that freedom is found in Christ alone.

When we are trying to walk in our own strength and our own power we will naturally do the things we desire to avoid.  We will fail to do the things we desire to do.  As long as we try to overcome the nature of the sinful nature we will fail miserably.  But through the grace of God and the power of the Holy Spirit we can have victory over every temptation.

A temptation is simply an offer to gratify the desires of the flesh.  When our eyes are focused on Jesus and we are abiding in the Lord, it is Him who lives through us and strengthens us for the journey.  The key to victory is simply humbling ourselves before the Lord and seeking Him with all our heart.  It is simply through seeking Him in the place of prayer and the study of God’s word that we when the battle against temptation.

We are involved in a spiritual war.  The enemy we face is not a physical one.  Satan is a spiritual being and He is defeated when we are in Jesus Christ.  But if we try to face the assaults and the schemes of the enemy in our own strength we will fail.  The only way for us to walk in the strength of the Lord is to simply abide in Him and seek Him.  A decision to follow Jesus Christ is a decision to seek Him daily.  It is not a one time decision, but it is a decision to turn our entire lives over to Jesus Christ.
