14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him. 1 John 5:14-15
The key to effective prayer is praying according to the Father’s will. The way we know we are praying according to the Father’s will is if we pray according to the leading of the Holy Spirit. As we abide in the Lord daily and grow in Him, our hearts and minds become one with His. His desires become the desires of our hearts and the things we desire to pray align with His plans and His purposes.
The way the Lord accomplishes His plans and purposes on the earth is through the lives of His sons and daughters. When we pray, our prayers ignite and empower angelic activity. Angels are ministering spirits who come alongside us and prepare the way for God’s glory. When we pray the way is made open for the gospel to go forth and the hearts of people are softened and prepared.
We also are called to pray in the Spirit on all occasions. This is different than praying in our understanding. When we pray in our understanding we pray in our natural tongue and we understand what we are praying. This type of prayer is limited because our understanding of what is taking place in the spiritual realm is limited.
When we pray in the Spirit we pray in the tongue given when we are baptized in the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 14:14-15). It is the Holy Spirit who gives us utterance when we pray in the Spirit and since the Holy Spirit knows the mind of the Father, everything the Holy Spirit leads us to pray is perfectly aligned with the will of God.
This is why praying in the Spirit is so very important and why we are commanded in scripture to pray in the Spirit on all occasions (Ephesians 6:18). Praying in the Spirit is a powerful weapon in advancing God’s kingdom. This is why the enemy has so attacked the truth of the baptism of the Holy Spirit and the gifts of the Spirit. His desire is that God’s people would stay limited and he has done this by planting his false teachings in the body of Christ.
Praying in the Spirit is available to every believer. But we must be willing to open our hearts to the baptism of the Holy Spirit and let go of our logic. The reason many fail to be baptized in the Holy Spirit is they will not open their hearts to the fullness of the Holy Spirit unless they understand it. But the truth is that we did not truly understand salvation until we opened our heart, believed, and took a step forward in faith. The same stands in being baptized in the Holy Spirit. We must simply open our hearts and submit to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
