Teach us to number our days

For we have been consumed by Your anger,
And by Your wrath we are terrified.
You have set our iniquities before You,
Our secret sins in the light of Your countenance.
For all our days have passed away in Your wrath;
We finish our years like a sigh.
10 The days of our lives are seventy years;
And if by reason of strength they are eighty years,
Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow;
For it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
11 Who knows the power of Your anger?
For as the fear of You, so is Your wrath.
12 So teach us to number our days,
That we may gain a heart of wisdom.  Psalm 90:7-12

We need to daily seek the Lord for wisdom and strength.  It is in the place of prayer that deep intimacy is developed with the Lord.  As we seek Him in the place of prayer we come to know His heart and we come to know His voice.  It is very easy to become distracted by the ways of the world if we fail to abide in Him.  It is only through abiding in Him that we walk in true victory and freedom.

The history of the nation of Israel was one of continual rebellion.  They would often turn from the Lord and His ways, and in His mercy He would draw His people back to Him.  The body of Christ would do well to study the history of Israel so that we can learn from their mistakes and shortcomings.

It is very easy to examine the wickedness of the past and become very prideful and believe that we are not capable of that.  But the truth is that we only find ourselves walking closely with the Lord because of His grace.  It is the Holy Spirit who empowers and leads us each day and each step at a time.  Those who are involved in wickedness will in time become consumed by it.  As believers in Jesus Christ as we abide in Him He will guard our hearts and lives from the wickedness of this world.  As we draw near unto the Lord we will naturally walk in holiness as a result.
