7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace 8 which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence, 9 having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself, 10 that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both[a]which are in heaven and which are on earth—in Him. 11 In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, 12 that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory. Ephesians 1:7-12
In Him we have all things. We have been predestined before the foundations of the earth. We are not following Jesus Christ by accident, but we are following Jesus Christ because we have been drawn by the power of the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit who has drawn us and it is God who is working all things together on the earth according to His will and purposes.
The longer we follow Christ and the more we grow in Him the more we come to see He is control of all things. He is in control of the leaders of the nations and He is in control of the decisions that are being made on a daily basis. The Lord is setting apart a bride for Himself. He is refining and a maturing a people for His glory. He is preparing a people for His return.
We are not called to fix our eyes upon the world or the wickedness of the world. We are called to fix our eyes on Jesus alone. Too many times when we get our eyes off of Jesus we walk in defeat and discouragement. Too many times when we get our eyes off Jesus we have divisions that exist in the body of Christ.
Fixing our eyes upon Jesus is the key to all things because He alone is the one who holds all things together. He alone is the one who holds our every breath and every moment in His hand. At any moment our life could end and it is God alone who is bringing all things to pass in our lives.
Our growth in Christ is simply due to the grace of God. Our understanding of God’s word is simply due to the grace of God. When we truly understand the depths of God’s grace for our lives we simply walk in freedom and authority. We understand that in God’s kingdom nothing is earned. We understand that righteousness is by faith alone.
When we understand the grace of God we truly begin to understand how to truly enjoy our relationship with God. Many times when people first come to Christ they believe that their works determine the level of God’s love for them. But what we learn as we mature is that God’s love is unchanging and works are simply a result of genuine faith and genuine growth.
The Christian life is one of transformation. As we are transformed into the image of Christ we will reflect the mind and heart of Christ in all things. We will simply desire to be a servant and to carry out the Father’s will. It is in fixing our eyes upon Jesus that we are transformed and we draw near. Because when our hearts are fixed on Jesus we no longer see anything else and when this happens we understand that every thing we need is simply found in Jesus Christ.
