To the seven churches

John,

To the seven churches in the province of Asia:

Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits[a] before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.  Revelation 1:4-5

The seven messages that John would write down were given directly from Jesus Christ and these seven messages would be for seven churches that existed at this time in the province of Asia which today would be known as western Turkey.

In this passage of scripture all three persons of the trinity are mentioned.  When it speaks of him who is, and who was, and who is to come speaks of God the Father and His eternal nature.  He has no beginning and no end.  He is above all and holds all things in His hand.  He has created all things and holds all things together.  Through Jesus Christ we have direct access to the Father because our sin no longer remains.  Through Christ we are righteous because of who He is and what He has done at Calvary.

The seven Spirits that are before the throne speaks of the person of the Holy Spirit.  Seven in the bible speaks of completeness and the Holy Spirit is perfection in every way.  He lives within our hearts and empowers us to carry out the Father’s will upon the earth.  The concept of the trinity is not something we can fully grasp with our limited understanding.  That God is one but three distinct persons.  Most who would try to understand this in their human understanding would see it as simply foolishness.  But when it comes to truth and God’s word we receive it by faith.  We may not fully understand it, but we receive it because it is what God’s word states is true and God’s word is the standard for all truth.

The last to be presented is Jesus Himself.  He sits at the right hand of the Father.  He is the first born of all creation.  He is not created, but has always existed.  Through Him all things were created and without Him nothing was created.  He is the first born from the dead and the ruler of all the kings of the earth.  He shall return someday and establish His kingdom upon the earth.  We currently live during the time of God’s grace.  He knocks on the door of every heart biding them to bow their knee and make Him Lord and Savior.

Sadly many will choose the ways of the world because they desire and lust after the sinful nature.  But for those who choose Jesus Christ, deny themselves, and pick up their cross will live forever in God’s kingdom.  We shall no longer know pain or suffering, but forever we shall experience a joy that we cannot even imagine.

There are times on this earth when the discouragement and doubt seems overwhelming.  There are times when the pain we experience seems to overwhelm us and becomes the place we learn to live in.  But all of it has a reason and purpose.  Those the Lord loves He prunes and there are many of us He is pruning in a very deep way.  He desires to display His glory and He is simply looking for vessels for His glory who will say yes and simply endure the journey.  Hold fast my friends because great things lie ahead.  We are the sons and daughters of the King, we are the bride of Christ, our King is coming.  Hold fast and press on toward the high call in Christ Jesus.  There is no greater honor than to give one’s life for the name of Jesus!
