10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day, and I heard behind me a loud voice, as of a trumpet, 11 saying, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last,” and,[f] “What you see, write in a book and send it to the seven churches which are in Asia:[g] to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamos, to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.” Revelation 1:10-11
The apostle John when he received this vision of what he wrote in Revelation was given to him on the Lord’s day. The Lord’s day is Sunday for that is the day in which Jesus Christ rose from the dead. Under the Old Covenant the Sabbath day was on Saturday. But as the body of Christ today we celebrate Sunday as the Lord’s day for it is the day our Savior rose from the dead. Now this doesn’t mean that we don’t celebrate everyday as the Lord’s day because we are called to a Sabbath rest on a daily basis. For Jesus has fulfilled the law and through His death and resurrection we rest in His finished work for us.
The voice that John heard was the able voice of Jesus Christ and this is why it sounded as a trumpet. For in Revelation John encounters Jesus in His glorified form and how He will be when He returns to rule the earth. He is the first and the last, He is the Alpha and Omega, He holds all things in His hands and He will fulfill His sovereign will upon the earth.
His voice and His message goes forth calling all to the place of salvation. Those who hear and respond in this hour will be saved from the hour of trial coming upon the earth. The Lord shall pour out His judgement upon the earth for the wickedness of humanity. The Lord at this time offers and extends His grace, but those who reject His grace and His mercy shall endure the seven year tribulation that is coming to the earth.
The Lord at this time is speaking through many His voice and His heart into the earth. And when John received this vision He received seven messages for seven churches that existed during John’s day. These churches were found in Asia minor and the message they received was not only for them, but for the body of Christ as a whole. We are called to examine these messages and to learn from them. Five of the churches received a rebuke while two did not.
We have been given the book of Revelation to be studied and not to be ignored. For too long too many have ignored the study of Revelation. The Lord is calling His people to seek Him for wisdom and understanding when it comes to studying and meditating upon God’s word. We should never fear God’s word, but consume it relentlessly. Let us examine and rightly divide God’s word. We can no longer make excuses concerning not having time or making time for the studying God’s word. No is the day and hour in which we must prepare our hearts for the return of Jesus.
