I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a book written inside and on the back, sealed up with seven seals.

I saw [a]in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a [b]book written inside and on the back, sealed up with seven seals. And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the [c]book and to break its seals?” And no one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the [d]book or to look into it. Then I began to weep greatly because no one was found worthy to open the [e]book or to look into it; and one of the elders *said to me, “Stop weeping; behold, the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the [f]book and its seven seals.”

And I saw [g]between the throne (with the four living creatures) and the elders a Lamb standing, as if slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God, sent out into all the earth. And He came and took the book out of the right hand of Him who sat on the throne. When He had taken the [h]book, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each one holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the [i]saints. And they *sang a new song, saying,

“Worthy are You to take the [j]book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation.

10 “You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God; and they will reign upon the earth.”  Revelation 5:1-10

John sees God the Father upon the throne and in His right hand he sees a scroll written on the front and back that is closed with seven seals.  The right hand speaks of authority and the scroll contains the judgment of God upon the wickedness of the earth.  There is only one who is worthy to break the seals.  The breaking of the seals sets in motion the final judgment that God will pour out upon the earth for the wickedness of humanity.  For wickedness has come to a place of maturity and fullness.

A strong angel appears and asks the question who is worthy to break the seals.  We must remember that this is a vision that John is receiving and all that is taking place in the vision is to reveal to not only John, but the greater body of Christ the greater truth of what will take place in the future.  We are called to be diligent students of God’s word and to study the full council of God’s word.

At first it seems after the strong angel has asked this that no one is able to open the seals.  John begins to weep because it seems no one is able to open the seals.  But one of the elders steps forth and declares to John that the lion of the tribe of Judah is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll.  Jesus is worth because of all that He accomplished at Calvary.  He alone deserves our worship and our praise and He alone is worth to break the seals and pour out the judgment of God the Father upon the wickedness of the earth.

John sees Jesus standing as if slain and the seven horns represent His perfect power, the seven eyes represent His perfect understanding and knowing all things, the seven Spirits represents the work of the Holy Spirit through Him while He was upon the earth to accomplish the purposes of God’s kingdom.

Jesus steps forth and takes the scroll from the hand of His Father that contains the judgment and wrath of Almighty God that is to be poured out.  When Jesus takes the scroll the four living creatures and the twenty four elders fall down to worship Jesus representing all creation worshiping the Lord.  The golden bowls full of incense are the prayers of the saints throughout the church age.  Sometimes we wonder if our prayers accomplish anything but we never pray anything in vain.  Our prayers go before the Lord and are used by our Father in Heaven to accomplish His purposes upon the earth.

The new song they sing speaks of Jesus work at Calvary in purchasing people through His precious blood.  It is the precious blood of Jesus that provides forgiveness of sin and pays the debt we owe unto the Lord.  Through Jesus ultimate sacrifice we are able to draw near to our Father in Heaven without fear or hindrance because our sin no longer remains.

Through Jesus we are priests and kings in God’s kingdom.  Being priest speaks to our place of intercession before the Lord.  Under the Old Covenant it was only the tribe of Levi who were able to be priests and were the only ones who could go into the temple.  It was only the high priest who could enter into the holy of holies and that was once a year on the day of Atonement.  But under the New Covenant Jesus is our High Priest and we are all priests and kings in God’s kingdom.  We are able to draw near to the throne of grace and pray forth our Father’s will upon the earth.

Being kings speaks of our place of authority through Jesus.  Jesus has given us authority because we are covered by His blood and have placed our faith and trust in the Lord.  Whatever we bind on earth will be bound in heaven and whatever we loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.  The body of Christ is the most power and influential group of people upon the earth.  We need to understand the authority we have through Christ and operate in the authority we have in every area of our lives.
