That this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it!

12 Through Silvanus, our faithful brother (for so I regard him), I have written to you briefly, exhorting and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it! 13 She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings, and so does my son, Mark.14 Greet one another with a kiss of love.  Peace be to you all who are in Christ.  1 Peter 5:12-14

Through Silas the apostle Peter wrote the book of 1 Peter.  Peter would speak and dictate according to the inspiration and leading of the Holy Spirit and Silas would write down the words that Peter spoke.  We are commanded to stand firm in the grace we have through Jesus Christ.  It is the grace of God that enables us to walk in victory.  God’s grace is His unmerited favor.  We haven’t done anything to earn God’s favor upon our lives, but it is because of our faith in Jesus Christ that God’s grace rests upon us.

The she the apostle Peter refers to is the bride of Christ.  Babylon is the world and the world system.  Babylon of old encompassed the wickedness of the world and the world’s system.  So when Peter refers to Babylon he refers to the world and its system.  In Christ we are chosen.  We are not in relationship with God by accident.  We were chosen before the foundations of the world and are saved by His grace and His mercy.

During the first century church greeting one another with a holy kiss was a sign of deep affection.  It was an accepted aspect of culture.  Today depending where we live in the world we may still greet one another with a holy kiss or we may hug or shake hands.  But the bottom line we are to greet one another in the love of Christ and let the love of Jesus lead and guide us in all that we do.

The peace of God is tangible and sets us apart from the world as sons and daughters of God.  The peace of God is something the world cannot understand and we are called to go forth in the peace of God.  When our hearts and minds are fixed upon Jesus we will be filled with the perfect peace of God in all that we do.
