“John, to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood,”
Revelation 1:4-5 NKJV
John begins the book of Revelation with seven messages to seven churches in Asia Minor. Asia Minor today would be found in modern day Turkey. They were seven churches that existed during John's day and since John was an apostle, his letter would have carried authority. But within these seven churches we find seven spiritual condition that have existed throughout the church age.
Grace from Him who was, who is, and who is to come speaks of the eternal nature of who God is. He has no beginning and He has no end. He has always been and holds all things within His hand.
The seven Spirit before the throne speaks of the Holy Spirit. The number seven in scripture points to perfection or completion. The Holy Spirit is the third person of the trinity and is one with God the Father and God the Son.
Jesus Christ is the faithful witness. He has fulfilled the Father's will and it is through Him alone we find forgiveness for sins. Jesus is the first born from the dead because He is the first one to overcome the grave and all who place their faith and trust in Him will overcome the second death. He alone rules over the kings of the earth. Men who rule now believe they have true power but they fail to understand it is God alone who has raised them up for His purposes and His glory. There is coming a day when Jesus shall return and establish His kingdom and rule the earth with a rod of iron.
Jesus chose the cross. He chose to lay down His life because of His love for us. We have been created in His image and chosen before the foundations of the world. Everything He does in our lives is because He loves us. Every plan and purpose He has for us are perfect. Let us trust Him and prepare daily for His soon return.
