Then I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands, and in the midst of the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band. Revelation 1:12-13
John upon hearing the voice like a trumpet in his vision naturally turns around to see who is speaking to him. When John turns he sees the seven golden lamp stands which represent the light and glory of God that burn eternally. All that Moses received concerning the construction of the temple was but a shadow of the heavenly tabernacle. The seven golden lamp stands also stand for the light that exist in the seven churches that Jesus is about to address. One of the warnings of the Lord of they fail to repent is to remove their lamp stand. For a lamp stand gives light in the darkness and the light and glory of God illuminates the darkness.
John writes that in the midst of the seven golden lamp stands he sees one like the Son of Man. This is a messianic term referring to Jesus Christ. He is both fully God and fully man. He is born of the line of King David but has always existed eternally. When they speak in scripture concerning the Son of Man with a capital S it always points to Jesus Christ.
John sees Jesus in His full glory. He is clothed in a garment with a gold band across His chest. John saw Jesus glorified on the mount of Transfiguration and as he sees Jesus here he is probably taken back to that moment. For Jesus stands in the midst of the seven golden lamp stands because He is the center and focus of everything. The Jesus we serve is alive and well and sits at the right hand of the Father having all authority and power. The more we study the full counsel of God's word the more we come to fully understand who Jesus Christ truly is. May our desire be to know Him and the power of the resurrection.
